Map and Compass Treasure Hunt
Ages 8 to 12

Find hidden treasures on an exciting scavenger hunt in the open space. Learn how to read a map, orient yourself, and find various sites using a map and compass. All participants will get to keep their found treasures as well as a compass! An accompanying adult is encouraged to come along, partner with the child and learn.

Look and listen to see who is prowling the ranch when the moon is full. Learn about nocturnal animals and their adaptations for exploring the night. Families are welcome!

Underwater Adventures
Ages 7 - 11
Grab a net, the kick screen and get your hands and possibly your feet dirty! Explore local waterways with a Metro District Park Ranger to see who lives under the water. Learn about the special skills these tiny critters have in order to survive in the water.

Rockin’ in the Ranch
Ages 7 - 10
What does igneous mean? What about metamorphic? Discover what those words mean and experiment with lots of cool rocks. Make a volcano and find out how they form!

Did you know that owls swallow their prey whole? Did you know that they have silent flight? Learn about our feathered friends with a Metro District Park Ranger. Touch an owl wing, talon, and skull. Dissect an owl pellet too!

Live Bat Program
All ages

Learn about bats from around the world up close and personal! Rob Mies will lead you into the mysterious world of bats to explore their benefits, habitats and nocturnal strategies. Listen to the bat’s high-pitched sound with a bat detector. You will meet a local bat from North America, a Straw-colored fruit bat from Africa, an endangered Golden Bat from the Indian Ocean island of Rodrigues, and for the finale, the largest bat in the world, the Gigantic Flying Fox Bat from Malaysia. Rob Mies is a conservation biologist and bat expert who has appeared on television shows including The Today Show, Live With Regis and Kelly, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and Martha Stewart. The underlying message of the presentation is about wildlife biodiversity around the world and the importance of protecting it from extinction.

Little Nature Explorers

These programs are designed with the little ones in mind! Your child will learn about nature through stories, hands-on activities, nature walks, and crafts. Children ages three through five must be accompanied by a parent. A snack will be provided. Dress appropriately for outdoor activities.
Class maximum: 15
All classes will be held at the Metro District Parks, Recreation & Open Space Service Center, 3280 Redstone Park Circle.

Fee: Resident: $6 Non-resident: $7
All classes will be held from 10 until 10:45 a.m.

Fur, feather and scales! These coverings protect and help animals. Touch real animal coverings and make a craft to take home.

The Metro District has created the Healthy Steps program to get you on the trail to a more active lifestyle.  Register now and you will receive a pedometer, log book, walking suggestions, and a Highlands Ranch Outdoor Guide that shows all of the great trails and parks where you can get your steps.  You'll also be able to connect with other walkers through our options walking partner list, accessed by the link below.  To register for Healthy Steps, please call Brenda Willcutt at
